British Airways is set to make a highly anticipated return to Melbourne, announcing the launch of daily flights between Melbourne and London Heathrow starting January 2027. The move marks the airline’s first Melbourne service since 2006 and represents a significant boost to connectivity between Australia and the UK.
The route will be operated by a four‑class Boeing 787‑9 Dreamliner, offering First, Club World (business), World Traveller Plus (premium economy) and World Traveller (economy). The journey includes a brief stop in Kuala Lumpur, where all passengers will disembark with their cabin baggage before continuing to their final destination.
Flight schedule:
- BA33 London → Melbourne
Departs London Heathrow at 9:10pm, arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 6:05pm the next day, and lands in Melbourne at 6:40am the following morning (from 9 January 2027). - BA34 Melbourne → London
Departs Melbourne at 4:35pm, arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 9:35pm, and reaches London Heathrow at 5:20am the next day (from 11 January 2027).
This new Melbourne service extends British Airways’ existing London–Kuala Lumpur route, which launched in 2025.
During the Kuala Lumpur stopover, eligible travellers, including First and Business Class passengers, BA Executive Club Silver and Gold members, and Oneworld Sapphire and Emerald frequent flyers (including Qantas Gold and Platinum), will have access to Malaysia Airlines’ Golden Lounges, offering a comfortable break between flights.
British Airways’ return adds valuable capacity to the Australia–UK market and opens up additional opportunities for travellers using Avios or Qantas Points to secure reward seats. It is not yet confirmed whether the Melbourne–Kuala Lumpur sectors will be available as standalone tickets.
The launch follows another major development for Victorian travellers: Finnair’s daily Melbourne–Helsinki service, commencing in October 2026. Together, these new routes significantly expand Melbourne’s direct access to Europe.
The Boeing 787‑9 will operate the route, though it remains unclear whether the aircraft will feature British Airways’ latest First and Club Suite cabins. At present, only one of the airline’s 787‑9 fleet has been upgraded. While more refits are expected before 2027, the newest cabins may not appear on the Melbourne route immediately.
